Novena in Honor of Saint Peregrine – Day 1

Novena in Honor of Saint Peregrine – Day 1

Preparatory Prayers

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Invocation to the Holy Spirit
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

Saint Peregrine, humble servant of the Lord and of Blessed Mary, come to our aid and support us in our weakness. Suffering invades our bodies and makes life uncertain, especially these days under the threat from the coronavirus. Our hearts are sad, we are scared, and our faith fails. By your prayers, grant us a living faith and a firm hope. May God have mercy on us, free us from all evil, and heal us in body, mind, and soul. May God’s holy will be done in us. Join your voice to our humble prayer, Saint Peregrine our brother, you who were the man of prayer living in service of the Blessed Virgin Mary and sharing now in the glory of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.

Today we begin our Novena to St. Peregrine. The prayers will be posted daily, ending on the Feast Day of St. Peregrine on May 4. We invite you to pray with us the daily novena prayers, placing your own personal petitions in the comments.

Day One of the Novena

Saint Peregrine, Man of Peace and Reconciliation
“Blessed be the Lord God who showed his loving kindness to blessed Peregrine and guided his feet into the way of peace.”

Saint Peregrine was part of the group of young Forli citizens who unleashed violence and insults against Saint Philip Benizi, who visited Forlí in attempt to reconcile the city divided between allegiances to the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor. Moved by Philip’s peaceful and merciful attitude, he repented and, on his way out of the city, he asked for forgiveness. Peregrine was pardoned by Saint Philip, who advised him to entrust himself to the protection of the Blessed Virgin.

Jesus Christ calls us to be builders of peace. The young Peregrine, after hitting Saint Philip, asked for forgiveness and became a humble disciple of the Master of Peace. Let us praise the mercy of God and implore that every person that draws near to the Lord will find health of body and peace of mind.

Our Father, who art in heaven…
Hail Mary, full of grace…
Glory to the Father…
Pray for us St. Peregrine, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Prayer
God, merciful Father, you called Peregrine, through his encounter with Saint Philip, to be an instrument of peace. Grant us a sincere spiritual conversion and health of body and mind so that we will recognize you as our only Lord and source of healing and peace. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. Peregrine, pray for us.
